Frequently Asked Questions
General
Is Acupuncture covered by OHIP?
Acupuncture is not covered by OHIP (except in the rare case when acupuncture is provided by an MD).
Does acupuncture hurt?
During an acupuncture session, you might experience a throbbing or tingling sensation. It’s like having something heavy on your skin, but it’s only mildly uncomfortable.
Your experience can also change depending on how you feel that day. If you’re hungry, dehydrated, or didn’t sleep well, the needles might be a little more uncomfortable.
If you are feeling very nervous about acupuncture being painful – make sure to speak up and let your practitioner know.
Do you offer cupping on its own?
We offer cupping therapy as a part of our acupuncture services, but it is not a treatment that can be booked on its own. If you would like to experience cupping, please book in for a full acupuncture session.
What should I wear to the appointment?
.Wear comfortable clothing that can easily be rolled up (ie. loose pant legs, short sleeve shirt or tank top). Rest assured that if you do need to undress we have extra sheets so you are properly draped and securely covered.
Should I eat before the appointment?
It is advisable to have a small meal a while before your treatment, to avoid coming in on an empty stomach. Please try to avoid having caffeine before your treatment as it may affect the results for some patients.
Do you offer herbal medicine?
We currently do not offer Chinese herbal medicine or Western herbal medicine at our clinic.
Fertility Acupuncture
Will this help me get pregnant?
Our aim is to help support your goal. We will work with you to get your body in the best possible place in order to conceive and hold a healthy pregnancy. Each individual’s story is different, and many factors may influence the outcome.
How often do I have to come in?
Each person’s fertility situation is unique, but we usually suggest a minimum of once per week. Plan for 2-3 months of weekly acupuncture treatments, although some patients will benefit from longer treatment plans. In certain situations we may recommend twice per weekly treatment, if needed.
I’m working with a fertility clinic. Can I still get acupuncture?
Yes, our therapies work to support you at any stage of conventional fertility treatment. Whether you are just starting to work with your fertility doctor, or are doing a medicated cycle, IUI or IVF. Our treatments are customized around each step of the process.
Where do the needles go for fertility acupuncture?
Acupuncture needles may be placed at various points on the body – it depends on the overall goal of each treatment plan and where you are in the monthly cycle. There are acupuncture points that are specifically used to support reproductive health, but the points are not always the same for every person, or even for each session.
Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture
Is Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture the same as getting Botox?
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture does not work the same way as fillers or Botox. It is more than a superficial spot treatment, and does not deposit anything into the skin.
Unlike with Botox, you will not get a frozen appearance, or be unable to move facial muscles. Note that acupuncture can help with issues that Botox cannot address: including sun damage, acne, or improving tone and texture of skin.
Can I get Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture when I’m pregnant?
Clinical acupuncture is safe during pregnancy for a range of health concerns. During a healthy pregnancy it is usually fine to have an occasional cosmetic acupuncture treatment, and appropriate points can be used for safety.
However, we do not recommend getting an intensive series of cosmetic acupuncture treatments during pregnancy.
How many treatments do I need in order to see results?
Each person’s situation is different, and individual healing rates can vary. Lifestyle factors such as age, sun damage, skin health, water intake and smoking can all affect how quickly treatments take effect.
It is recommended to have a minimum of 5 Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture treatments in order to begin seeing results. A series of 10 or more sessions may be needed for individuals with severe acne, aging or damaged skin.
Who should avoid Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture?
Although this treatment can benefit persons of any age, in some cases it is not suitable. Please inform your practitioner if any of the following apply:
current cold, flu or sinus infection
vertigo
(unmedicated) high blood pressure
bleeding disorder such as hemophilia
blood thinner medications
chronic migraines on regular basis
acute herpes outbreak on face or scalp
Botox or other injectable in past 4 months
skin resurfacing in past 4 weeks
cosmetic surgery in past 6 months
